If you missed the 1st Annual Charity On the Water Poker Run last year, then you missed a fun filled afternoon of boating, kayaking and paddling, playing poker, winning and losing, and socializing ---- all for a great cause! Fort Pierce Yacht Club has designed a unique and highly specific charity event: the funds generated by the event sponsor a summer intern to do research at FAU Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute. Its designee is a local student (a junior at IRSC); the field of research for the summer intern is marine sciences --- a contribution we can all make to maintaining our area’s most critical asset, our waters; and supports the ongoing work of our local and renowned research institute, Harbor Branch. This internship is not only life changing for the recipient but has the potential of improving our environmental.

Fort Pierce Yacht Club had the opportunity to host the 2018 summer intern recipient, Mariana Lopez, at their Third Thursdays/Eco Evenings lecture series. Mariana displayed a new-found confidence in her intellectual talents and newly learned research skills that would have made any 2018 Poker Run participant and sponsor proud to be part of the program! Studying under Dr. Nick Dickens for 10 weeks, Mariana had designed and implemented a program to measure fecal material in our waters, and to relate the concentration of its presence to the degree of sanity. This research was but a small step in determining the factors of water pollution and its relationship to fresh water run-off in an overall effort to purify our waters. But this step was critical to the scholar whose grades have improved, who is now a tutor to others, and who is now well positioned for acceptance in medical school. It also changed her view of her pending career choices, less focused on the practice of medicine and now more focused on medial research. “We found the perfect niche for our Club to contribute to the community and to the life of a local resident. We could not be prouder of the contributions made by the Club, our host of sponsors and each participant. Indeed, it takes a village and we were pleased to lead” said Diane Korbey, Vice Commodore of Fleet and program chair.

Encouraged by the results of last year’s successes, Fort Pierce Yacht Club will host its 2nd Annual On the Water Poker Run Sunday, April 14th starting at 12 noon. Again, proceeds from the event will fund a summer internship at FAU Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute and again awarded to an IRSC college sophomore majoring in marine sciences. “It is all about giving back to our community, to our waterfront and to our future” says Jeff Thornton, Commodore of the Club.

Didn’t register to participate yet? Registrations are open until Friday morning, April 12th at https://www.fortpierceyachtclub.com/poker-run. We also have sponsorship opportunities remaining. “No one should miss this opportunity to have a great time while supporting a great cause” said Commodore Thornton.
