Story Time in the Gallery: Fun for the Youngest Readers

Story Time in the Gallery Martin County
Date: Event occurs the last Thursday of every month.
Time: 10:00 am - 10:30 am
Location: Court House Cultural Center
Address: 80 S.E. Ocean Boulevard, Stuart
Category: Arts / Exhibits
You’re never too young to learn to love the arts!
The Arts Council of Martin County has worked to enhance and elevate arts education to residents of all ages since its founding in 1980.
This year, the Council launched a program geared toward the youngest demographic of our community: preschoolers.
Story Time in the Gallery is made possible by PNC Bank’s Arts Alive program, and will offer art-themed story time geared preschool children and their families on the last Thursday of each month
Story time at the Court House Cultural Center will last from 10-10:30 a.m., since this is the usual attention span of a toddler. Volunteer readers from Bridges Montessori, The Pine School and PNC Bank- among others - will select books that broadly celebrate the arts in some way.
Selections may involve a beautifully illustrated storybook with the reader explaining the medium used or it could be a ‘learn to count’ book using Van Gogh’s sunflowers. One volunteer plans to discuss the color wheel using books about rainbows.
Some readers will be dressing up: the first plans to dress up as an artist and the Treasure Coast Cosplayers will be in costume; however attire is optional.
Any adult accompanying the child will remain for the duration of the program and families are encouraged to linger, mingle, and enjoy the exhibit after the Story Time in the Gallery presentation in an effort to add to the sense of community that is centered around the arts.
Story Time Programs plays a significant role in the Arts Council’s vision of enhancing arts education and fostering appreciation of the arts to residents of every age. There is no cost for these special mornings and, although geared towards preschoolers, accompanied children of any age are welcome.
Don’t miss any of the exciting monthly presentations of Story Time Programs, all starting at 10 a.m. on the last Thursday of the month.

THE BENEFACTORS

TCCC

Treasure coast compassionate care is a companion care company that was created to provide services for seniors and veterans in Indian river County. Our company even though provides care for everyone who needs companion care in the home, has found that there are many seniors and veterans who cannot afford the services. With that being said we have decided to enter into a nonprofit status so that we are able to raise funds for seniors and veterans in need of emergency home health care or other services who would not otherwise be able to afford it. This gives us the opportunity to provide services goods and other needs. By raising these funds we are able to provide home health services, household needs, food and nutritional items as well as funds to help pay for life-saving medications, medical equipment, transportation and other basic needs for survival. In 2017 alone we were able to raise enough funds to help over 600 seniors and veterans who otherwise would’ve had no care or needs met, that just provide basic survival. Treasure Coast Community Health care was also able to raise enough funds and disaster relief to transport over 300,000 pounds of supplies to Houston Texas for hurricane Harvey affecting over 6000 families, as the mayor of Houston said we were able to impact more families than the Red Cross. At Christmas we provided for 388 seniors and veterans and 140 children and families. Our goal is always to put people before profit, and yes we do take clients who can self-pay or bill through insurance we want to make sure that there is nobody that is left behindAnd nobody that doesn’t receive the same care that are self paying clients receive.By raising the funds throughout the year we hope to be able to keep the momentum and keep providing care to everyone no matter their socioeconomic status.

THE VETERANS COUNCIL

The monument is named "Words from War" and is to honor the many men and women who have fought the War on Terror since 1990 in the Middle East primarily Iraq (Operation Iraqi Freedom OIF) and Afghanistan (Operation Enduring Freedom OEF). The monument has been commissioned by the Veterans Council through the Next Generation veterans to Ross Power an internationally known monument creator. Ross has created a monument the speaks to the OEF/OIF forces by the construction of "walls" that surround strategic facilities which are designed to give those inside a sense of safety from the potential of death outside the walls. The walls will contain 48 "Words from War" which were taken from interviews with OEF/OIF veterans. The walls are unique to the War on Terror and will be recognized by any veteran.

Category: Community
Bring the family to have dinner and help support the UP Center. Dinner is served at 5:30 and all ages are welcome.
Volunteering can teach
A sense of responsibility. Kids and teens learn what it means to make and keep a commitment. They learn how to be on time for a job, do their best, and be proud of the results. They also learn that, ultimately, we're all responsible for the well being of our communities.
That one person can make a difference. A wonderful, empowering message for kids is that they're important enough to have an impact on someone or something else.
The benefit of sacrifice. By giving up a toy to a less fortunate child, a child learns that sometimes it's good to sacrifice and that there are important things besides ourselves and our immediate needs.
Tolerance. Working in community service can bring kids and teens in touch with people of different backgrounds, abilities, ethnicities, ages, and education and income levels. They'll learn that even the most diverse individuals can be united by common values.
Job skills. Community service can help young people decide on their future careers. Are they interested in the medical field? Hospitals and clinics often have teenage volunteer programs. Do they love politics? Kids can work on the real campaigns of local political candidates. Learning to work as a team member, taking on leadership roles, setting project goals ... these are all skills that can be gained by volunteering and will serve kids well in any future career.
How to fill idle time wisely. If kids aren't involved in traditional after school activities, community service can be a wonderful alternative.

Singing with the Stars

Singing with the Stars Martin County
Date: Saturday February 24, 2018
Time: 7:00 pm
Location: Lyric Theatre
Address: 59 SW Flagler Ave, Stuart, FL 34994
Category: Fund Raiser
Do you have both the talent to sing a duet on stage, and the motivation to raise money to support the arts? If so, Artists for a Cause, Inc. encourages you to submit your application to participate in its fifth annual Singing with the Stars fundraising event! Money raised will help the non-profit organization fulfill its mission of supporting artists who serve community needs. Eight exceptional individuals will be selected and paired with professional singers. Each duo will train and compete in front of a live audience and panel of judges at the Lyric Theatre on Saturday, February 24 at 7:00 p.m. The overall competition winner is determined by a combination of performing talent and fundraising results.

While Singing with the Stars has raised more than $110,000 for Artists for a Cause, it is more than a fundraising event. It also helps to bring awareness to the programs of Artist for a Cause, all of which have a dual impact in their ability to support culture, and meet critical community needs. The four core programs include: Therapeutic Arts, which sends the healing power of arts to at-risk youth and the elderly; Dance for Food, a series of dance performances where the admission price is a bag of non-perishable food; A4AC School Clubs, which activate community-responsible arts students who use their talent to address critical community needs; and Support for Charities, which manages the collaboration between artists and the causes they support, helping both parties to get the most out of their partnership.

“I founded Artists for a Cause to help other artists to use their talent to make a difference,” said Terry Barber Executive Director of Artists for a Cause. “When we begin by supporting artists, we are already improving communities. The fact that we always use that talent to address another need is the unique dual impact our organization is proud of. I am always delighted by the new connections this event makes for A4AC. If you have hidden talent, this is your chance to take the stage!”

Past winners include: David Dew; Chris Jung; Shaun Kelly; Leslie Levy; Susie McAllister; Donna Roselli; Gil Smart; Michael Terrio and Linda Weiksnar.

Community singers will be chosen through an open application and audition process. To download an application, go to www.a4ac.org and return it to megan@fireflyforyou.com by November 10, 2017 along with a short video audition. For more information call 772-419-8778.

About Artists for a Cause
Founded in 2009 by internationally acclaimed countertenor Terry Barber, Artists for a Cause supports artists who serve community needs. No program is merely about art for arts’ sake – Artists for a Cause is about the arts as a solution. A sampling of programs include: Therapeutic Arts, which sends the healing power of arts to children and the elderly; Dance for Food, where the price of admission is a bag of food to help the hungry; A4AC School Clubs, which enable students to use the arts as a means to strengthen communities; and Support for Charities, which connects artists to non-profit organizations where they can use their talents for the greater good. The organization, founded on Palm City, FL now has a second location in St. Louis, MO. For more information visit A4AC.org, like us on Facebook, or call 772-419-8778.

Nothing better than getting some exercise and paddling hard, knowing theres a cold brew and a hot dog waitin for ya at the finish line!

We have 3 course options: 1.5 mile, 3 mile, and 5 mile. With our youngest paddler still in grade school. doing the 1.5 mile course! So when we say this is for all ages and levels, we mean it. The 5 milers obviously take it a little more seriously, but the 1.5 mile and the 3 mile course is a great way to get some regular exercise.

We've been doing weekly Thursday night fitness races for a while now, and instead of going to a restaurant after we figured why not just do our own grill out? So after every race we ask you to bring either something to cook up or a side, we'll have condiments, beer and a water jug.

We hope to continue to grow this tradition and look forward to seeing you soon!

**To reserve your board, please call the shop to pay ahead of time. It's $10 to rent a board, and supplies are limited. We can't save boards even if you RSVP unless they are paid for. Thank you!
