Time: 9:00 am
Location: Brightonfield Day & Rodeo
Address: 500 E Harney Pond Rd NE, Okeechobee, Florida 34974

Whats a FAWC event like?

It starts with a shallow water ring in the middle of a dirt arena or "pit". You notice the huge trailer in the background with an enormous black banner that says "FAWC" in black and red. The stands begin to fill with families as the excitement starts to build. You hear children chattering and squealing with excitement asking their parents a bunch of questions about alligators. You hear adults asking other adults questions and sharing thier own experiences with alligators and TV shows. Then you notice the ambulance back in and stage itself just adjacent to the pit. Gulp. You are quickly reminded just how serious and dangerous this competition is. You say a little prayer, it's happening soon! You start to notice the guys - the wrestlers - the athletes and their loved ones gather on one side of the arena. You start to think, are they crazy? What are they going to to do this year? Have they been practicing? Hmmm how do you actually practice to wrestle a wild nuisance alligator? Gulp. You're excited. You start to notice judges with pens and papers situating themselves in opposite corners of the pit. The excitement is building. Its almost time. You then take notice of the emcee and the wranglers taking postion by the trailer. Is that where the gators are? And before you know it or have had the chance to process you hear the beats of the music and your attention is called to a huge screen illuminated that begins an intro into the history of alligator wrestling and FAWCs inception. While you are intrigued and watching the intro. The wranglers are bringing the first gator to the pit and the wrestler is assuming his position and quickly assessing the alligators mannerisms before its time to set foot in the ring. Video Ends. Crowd cheers. Emcee takes over. Wrestler steps in the ring. Holy FAWC... HEREEEE we go!

FAWC 7 (Freestyle Alligator Wrestling Competion) is a three day event in which athletes compete in the sport of freestyle alligator wrestling.

The FAWC three day event is fun for the whole family and leaves spectators on the edge of their seats. The entire competition is emceed to share information about the various techniques and reasons for the history and culture of Native Americans wrangling alligators.

Very similar to bullriding and rodeo competitions, points are awarded in each timed competition to the wrestlers based on a variety of categories. Wrestlers compete the first two days and on the last day of competion the athletes with the top scores compete in the "Finals" to be the 2019 FAWC 7 Champion!

The program opens with Aaron Coplands Appalachian Spring. With its spartan simplicity and tenderness, it is a perfect foil for the passions of Sibelius. The second half is Schumanns tender and romantic First Symphony - the Spring Symphony.

Rossini, Overture to LItaliana in Algeri
Falla, El amor brujo: Ballet Suite
Bizet, Symphony in C

David Amado, Conductor
Tara Curtis, Guest Artist, mezzo-soprano
Eva Conti, Guest Artist, flamenco

Two exotic works about love occupy the first half of our concert. Rossinis witty, spirited overture to LItaliana in Algeri - an opera about love in a far-off land; and Fallas smoldering, hot-blooded Iberian ballet score about love, magic, and flamenco dancing. On the second half, the youthful, ebullient symphony from the master who brought us Carmen.

David Amado, Conductor
Tessa Lark, Guest Artist, violin

High-voltage violinist Tessa Lark joins us for Sibeliuss Violin Concerto. Turning icy and passionate; melancholy and joyful; it is a perfect showcase for Larks wide-ranging gifts. The program opens with Aaron Coplands Appalachian Spring. With its spartan simplicity and tenderness, it is a perfect foil for the passions of Sibelius. The second half is Schumanns tender and romantic First Symphony - the Spring Symphony.

8th Annual Slow Food Gold & Treasure Coast U-Drive Farm Tour and “Celebrate Local Food Week”

8th Annual Slow Date: Saturday February 9, 2019 through Saturday February 16, 2019.
Time: All Day Event
Category: Food / Beverage
The public is invited to join Slow Food Gold & Treasure Coast as we hold our 8th Annual U-Drive Farm Tour on Saturday, February 16, 2019. Join us for a full-day tour of small-scale, sustainable farms in Indian River, Martin and St. Lucie counties.

This is a free event.

Visitors will have an opportunity to get up close to learn about farm animals and farming. A tour guide booklet will be posted at our website www.SlowFoodGTC.org and Facebook page: Slow Food Gold and Treasure Coast. We hope you will join us in celebrating not only healthy living but healthy eating.

We are also raising the bar in 2019 as we turn the spotlight on our chapter business partners who have earned a Snail of Approval and potential candidates, as well as our local farmers, micro-growers and eateries. By celebrating them and what they contribute to the local food market, we raise public consciousness of the Slow Food movement, their devotion, entrepreneurship and joie de vivre.

As part of the Slow Food mission, the Board of Directors, chapter members and its Snail of Approval awardees invite area-wide foodies to “Celebrate Local Food Week”, raising awareness of farm-to-fork cuisine, fresh from Florida green market vendors and chef epicurean specialties. We have invited Snail of Approval awardees to prepare a meal, hold an event or workshop (for a nominal fee or free to the public) in celebration of our local food systems.

Whereby, we declare February 9 through February 15 “Celebrate Local Food Week”, wrapping up the festivities on February 16 with the 8th Annual Slow Food Gold & Treasure Coast U-Drive Farm Tour.

Contributing to the local, fresh food movement, our growers and producers offer the finest products that are beneficial to a healthy lifestyle. Our Snail of Approval distinction is awarded to those whose lives are dedicated to growing and producing healthy food from the earth.

Attention artists: If you would like to participate at a farm on the tour as a plein air painter, watercolorist or display your food artistry, contact Debra Magrann [hulagirl.1955@gmail.com].

We strive to spread the theme of “Good, Clean and Fair Food” throughout the Treasure Coast: to change the way folks eat, to be healthy consumers and financially support our growers, farmers and chefs. The more we support local producers, the more we can impact local communities with “live” food.

If you’d like to join as a member and volunteer, let us know. An e-booklet providing a complete listing of participating farms, tour details and schedule can be found on our website and Facebook page (after Jan. 31). For more information go to www.SlowFoodGTC.org.

About The Market

Seeds of the Stuart Green Market date back to the late 1990s, when rancher and professional "honeyman", Pat Bradley, was nominated to become the tiny market's first official manager. With funding and support through downtown Stuart's Main Street organization, Pat was able to bring together a few fellow vendors to Memorial Park on Sunday mornings. After five relocations over the years and a long tenure of management by "market mom" Bobbi Spencer, the Stuart Green Market has found a happy home next to City Hall beside the picturesque St. Lucie River waterfront.
Featuring top quality fresh produce, cut flowers (seasonal), honey, freshly-baked breads and pastries, hot sauces, handcrafted soaps and lotions, grass fed/local beef, poultry, and eggs, goat milk and cheeses, organic spice blends, artisan crafts and handmade jewelry, as well as a myriad of freshly prepared gourmet foods for breakfast and lunch - the Stuart Green Market is the area's premier destination for the finest local goods our community has to offer. Come by to see what is offered this season, and meet our friendly market vendors!
