Planetarium Show St. Lucie County
Date: Friday December 13, 2019 through Saturday December 14, 2019.
Time: Times Vary
Location: IRSC Hallstrom Planetarium
Category: Educational
The Indian River State College (IRSC) Hallstrom Planetarium takes part in a season of festive fun as it presents its popular holiday tradition of more than 25 years—“Star of Wonder.” Shows will be presented Friday, December 6 at 6:00 and 7:30 p.m., Saturday, December 7 and at 1:00 and 2:30 p.m.; Friday, December 13 at 6:00 and 7:30 p.m.; and Saturday, December 14 at 1:00 and 2:30 p.m. Tickets for “Star of Wonder” are $5.

A perennial favorite, “Star of Wonder” recreates the skies as they appeared 2,000 years ago. Could it have been a comet, a meteor, or a supernova? How might an astronomer explain it? Viewers will trace what may have been the path of the mysterious star followed by the Wise Men—revealing the constellations and the locations of planets. “We will ask the question, ‘What was it in the sky that compelled the Magi to embark on a journey of hundreds of miles across desert and mountains?’” shares Jon Bell, IRSC Hallstrom Planetarium Director. “This program will bring the audience one step closer to understanding.”

Tickets for shows at the Hallstrom Planetarium can be purchased online at www.irsc.edu or at the box office in the McAlpin Fine Arts Center lobby on the IRSC Main Campus at 3209 Virginia Avenue in Fort Pierce, Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., or by phone with VISA, MasterCard, Discover or American Express. Call the McAlpin Fine Arts Center Box Office at 1-800-220-9915 to reserve seats. Planetarium shows are recommended for adults and for children over the age of four. The Hallstrom planetarium's temperature is maintained at 72 degrees and visitors may want to bring a light jacket or sweater.

St. Lucie County resident Ashley Guevarez is an inspiring artist who has always had a strange cocktail of fantasy and creativity brewing inside her head. As a child, she began to fall in love with nature and started fusing her own fantasies into the world around her. Guevarez expresses this energy through drawing, painting and other various art forms, sharing her creations and offering a glimpse into the world of her imagination.
Jonathan Joachim began his journey into photography in his teenage years, just using his cell phone. Over time, through self-education and practice, his skills improved. His passion for animals and nature inspire him to travel and capture life all around the world from a different point of view. To Joachim, every-thing is beautiful depending on how you portray it. He uses a NikonD5500 DSLR, DJI Mavic Pro drone and GoPro Hero4. His goal is to continue his travels and venture to unique and exotic places. Joachim puts his heart and soul into his work and hopes that everyone will gain something out of it.

GIANT Yard Sale

GIANT Yard Sale St. Lucie County
Date: Saturday December 14, 2019
Time: 8:00 am - 4:00 pm
Location: Creature Safe Place
Address: 4500 McCarty Rd, Fort Pierce
Category: Fund Raiser
At Creature Safe Place, we’re up to the rafters with cool stuff donated for our annual auction, but we lost the building that hosts, so now we need to get rid of all that awesome stuff! That’s not lucky for us, but it’s lucky for you.

Creature Safe Place, the area’s wild and exotic animal rescue and rehabilitation center, will be holding a GIANT Yard Sale.

The sale will feature all kinds of stuff and will give attendees a chance at scoring some pretty fabulous bargains. Best of all, 100 percent of the sales go back to the animals housed and rehabilitated at Creature Safe Place. That’s because everyone at Creature Safe Place is a volunteer, and we rely on donations from the community to help keep the animals on the mend and being well cared for.

For the past 13 years, Creature Safe Place has only hosted one event each year – a crazy party and auction that helped raise funds to keep the creatures happy, healthy, and on the road to recovery. But this year, the building that houses the annual auction was sold, and another location hasn’t yet been secured. Still the donations of items have come in, and now we’re up to our rafters in cool stuff that needs to be re-homed. While you’re searching out bargains at this one-day blowout extravaganza, you may not meet any wild animals, aside from our volunteers, of course, but you might hear some hooting, hollering, scratching, and screeching. That’s just the animals at Creature Safe Space thanking you for supporting them and giving them a second chance at a miracle.

When you come, why not bring a can of dog or cat food, roll of paper towels, gift card, or cash donation to help ensure the creatures at this rehabilitation facility continue to thrive and find their way back to living as they were meant to be – wild life. For more information, find Creature Safe Place on Facebook, or call (772) 579-0618

Metta Meditation

The practice is the softening of the mind and heart, an opening to deeper and deeper levels of the feeling of kindness, of pure love. Loving-kindness, or metta, is unconditional, it does not depend on whether one deserves it or not; it is not restricted to friends and family; it extends out from personal categories to include all living beings.

A few studies suggest that loving-kindness meditation may impact health and well-being. One study done at Stanford University suggests that a short 7 minute practice of loving-kindness meditation can increase social connectedness. Loving-kindness meditation has also been shown to reduce pain and anger in people with chronic lower back pain.

Researcher Barbara Fredrickson at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill found that loving-kindness meditation can help boost positive emotions and well-being in life, fostering the personal resources that come from experiencing positive emotion.

Tuna is the made-up, tiny town featured in “A Tuna Christmas,” the hilarious sequel to the hit comedy “Greater Tuna,” both written by Ed Howard, Jaston Williams and Joe Sears. This hilarious tongue-in-cheek homage to small-town American life leaves little untouched. You’ll revisit Southern-fried expressions such as “I miss her like a rash,” “older than water and ‘bout half mean,” “as useless as ice trays in ----,” and “If you can hear my voice, you’re too close!”
