COVID-19 Extension Outreach Addresses Agricultural, Nursery & Landscape Workers
The April 17 COVID-19 advisory produced by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security identifies food and agricultural production systems as critical infrastructure in the U.S. Locally, the UF/IFAS Extension St. Lucie County is partnering with the Florida Department of Health in St. Lucie County to engage with St. Lucie County Agricultural, Nursery and Landscape workers on COVID-19 virus prevention safety outreach education. The goal is to increase knowledge about the use of masks and social distancing to reduce the spread of the COVID-19 virus in the agricultural sectors of our community. Informational flyers on use and care of the masks is available in English, Spanish and Haitian Creole for agriculture, nursery and landscape workers.
The Florida Department of Health in St. Lucie County is working in support of the agricultural sector by soliciting requests for masks and information, which is available on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last. Managers of citrus, vegetable production, landscaping or other agricultural commodities can request masks and information. Be certain to provide the number of masks, as well as the quantity by language(s) of the materials to go with them. Contact information is also needed. For additional information, contact the UF/IFAS Extension St. Lucie County at 772-462-1660. It is recommended that manager or directors of Agricultural, Nursery, and Landscape Professionals send the request on behalf of all employees. This information will be collected by the Extension Office and forwarded to Stefanie Myers at the Florida Department of Health in St. Lucie County.
