Soroptimist International of Stuart Awards Change Lives

By Jackie Holfelder

one of Soroptimist International of Stuart’s most meaningful events took place, as the non-profit presented its annual Awards Celebration at Manero’s in Palm City.

Year after year, amazing women receive scholarships to help pave their way as they initiate or continue life-changing career paths.

Sabby Hightower was the Live Your Dream award recipient. Parameters for the award specify the recipient be a primary breadwinner with more than one dependent who will use the money for an education degree. Sabby has overcome hardships that could have crippled once less determined, including the sudden death of her husband and a house fire in which her family lost much of her belongings.  She is working towards an advanced degree in health care management at IRSC. She received a $1500 award.

The Women in Transition Award recipient was given to Gloriues Hartfield-Dennis. This individual must be 40 or older with no dependents, going to school to change her career path. Gloriues has made huge academic strides at IRSC, including receiving her GED. She, too, received $1500, and is returning to the college campus to work on her degree in social work.

The Youth Service Award, which is for $1,000, went to recent Pine School graduate Anna McGovern, who has compiled an impressive academic, volunteer and athletic resume, including starting an organic garden at the school.

The three scholarships are financed with proceeds from Soroptimist International of Stuart’s annual Women of Distinction dinner.
