Atlantic Classical Orchestra, Vero Beach Friends of the ACO
Thanks to a generous donation by the Vero Beach Friends of the Atlantic Classical Orchestra, students in the Vero Beach High School Band have a little more in their collective stash for their upcoming trip across the ‘pond.’
In late December, 102 student musicians and approximately 38 chaperones and companions are traveling to London, England, a costly but exciting trip indeed! In addition to tours of Greenwich, Windsor, the Tower of London and other significant points of interest, the band and its entourage will experience authentic English cuisine. They will also stand in cues and use the loos!
The adventure culminates with a performance in the London New Year’s Day Parade!
Band Captain Stella Rose Stawara said, “It’s a very different experience and an amazing opportunity to participate in something completely different and bigger than Vero Beach.”
“This will be the largest audience we’ve ever played for,” added Band Director Page Howell. “About 500 million will watch us on television!”
Jean Beckert, President of the Vero Beach Friends of the ACO, indicated that typically donations are presented at the group’s Friendraiser Luncheon. Because in this circumstance, the luncheon, scheduled for Monday, February 18, 2019, at 11 am at the Vero Beach Country Club, occurs after the trip, Beckert and Friend Mary Shoaf personally delivered a check to the high school.
“This presents a unique opportunity to tie everything together,” said Beckert. “Now, we can have a question and answer session with the students about their experience when they come to our Luncheon.”
Vero Beach Friends of the ACO is the oldest of the three volunteer arms of the Atlantic Classical Orchestra and is in its 29th year.
Serving as ambassadors, fundraisers and providing volunteer support in a host of capacities including community outreach, the Friends groups, which also include Stuart and Palm Beach, are instrumental to the ACO and its mission.
The mission of the Atlantic Classical Orchestra is “to present classical music performances of the highest possible artistic level while encouraging and cultivating the appreciation of classical symphonic music by offering enriching, educational, and accessible musical experiences to Treasure Coast & Palm Beach County residents."
