St. Lucie County Offers Lifeguard Certification
St. Lucie County’s Parks and Recreation Department will offer an American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Course, starting with a pre-course on Saturday, March 10 from noon to 2 p.m. at the Ravenswood Pool. The full course will take place Monday, March 12 through Friday, March 16 starting at 9 a.m. at the Lakewood Park Pool.
The cost for this course is $200. Successful completion of this course certifies participants in lifeguarding, first aid, CPR, AED, emergency oxygen administration and blood-borne pathogens. This certification is valid for two years.
Participants must be at least 15 years old (please bring a form of ID for proof of age. If under 18 - participants must have parent’s signature). Additionally, participants must be able to swim continuously for 300 yards (100 yards freestyle – front crawl; 100 yards breaststroke and 100 yards freestyle or breaststroke). The prerequisite requires candidates to be able to swim 20 yards (feet-first surface dive in a minimum of six feet of water) to retrieve a 10-pound brick from the bottom of the pool and swim back 20 yards with the brick and exit the pool within one minute and 40 seconds; as well as tread water for two minutes using only legs.
To pre-enroll – email Erin Lau at LauE@stlucieco.org. Candidates will not be allowed in the class unless pre-enrollment has been completed. Candidates must bring their own pocket mask, whistle and swim suit. Payment is required in full upon completion of the pre-course.
Managed and operated by St. Lucie County’s Parks and Recreation Department, Ravenswood Pool is located at 400 SW Ravenswood Lane, Port St. Lucie, while the Lakewood Park Pool is located at 5990 Emerson Ave., Fort Pierce. St. Lucie County operates three public pools, which are primarily open from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
