It’s Personal: Port St. Lucie Business Women Unite To Raise Funds For Breast Cancer Research

“It’s Personal” was the tag line for the Port St. Lucie Business Women who participated in the annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk held October 20 at First Data Field, having lost fellow member Shirley Melachrinoudis just one month prior. Under this year’s theme “What Unites Us, Ignites Us,” 29 Port St. Lucie Business Women and their family members joined together, a number of whom are survivors themselves.

Shirley’s daughter, Elizabeth Melachrinoudis, was a key speaker at this event and associated with the Business Women’s team. (She also lost her father to cancer in 2015.) Elizabeth is a junior at the University of South Florida and the Survivor Committee Chair for Relay For Life at the university. She credits the American Cancer Society and the Business Women for their support and for helping her deal with her mother’s illness. “My mother was a fighter and instilled that quality in me,” said Elizabeth. In her speech she saluted survivors and emphasized the importance of knowing your body and getting regular checkups.

The Port St. Lucie Business Women’s custom team T-shirts were designed by  Business Women member Diane Gallagher of DSG Designs & Photography and donated by Diane, Angela Hayle of ACCH Insurance Agency, Patricia Garcia King of Keller Williams Realty and Holley Surgical Arts. Below the signature twisted pink ribbon was a space to write the name of the person for whom the participant was walking, further personalizing the event.

The Business Women also sponsored a water station, as it has done in past years. American Cancer Society Southeast Region’s Community Development Manager Danielle Shalginewicz said, “I’m proud to be part of this community and associated with the Port St. Lucie Business Women, who for the past nine years has helped us make a great impact in the lives of our residents. I thank them for their partnership and their support.”

Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in American women and the second leading cause of cancer death in women. Women have a one in eight chance of developing invasive breast cancer. Due to improvements in treatment and early detection, more women – and men – are surviving breast cancer today. The Port St. Lucie Business Women is proud to support the American Cancer Society’s search for a cure, education and outreach.

Save the date for next year’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, to be held on October 19, 2019.
