Every year the Port St. Lucie Business Women awards grants from money raised in the organization's annual spring Fashion Show. Awards totaling $10,000 were presented to four Treasure Coast non-profit organizations that benefit women and children in our community at their November 17 meeting. This year, the Community Action & Grants committee decided to present larger awards of $2,500 each for greater financial impact.

ARC of St. Lucie County received a grant for the purchase of a replacement range and oven to support the Adult Care Food Program. The new oven will enable the organization to continue providing lunch for more than 50 adults with disabilities on a daily basis. Additionally, participants have the opportunity to learn life skills such as food preparation and delivery through its Adult Day Training program. These skills can help the individuals both personally and professionally as they learn meal preparation.

Healthy Start Coalition of St. Lucie County received a grant for its Nurse Family Partnership ®. This program partners low-income women pregnant with their first child with a registered nurse, beginning early in her pregnancy. The nurse conducts home visits to improve pregnancy and birth outcomes, child health and development, and life course goals.

Council on Aging of St. Lucie received a grant for their Meals on Wheels program. Meals on Wheels provides homebound and functionally impaired clients with low-cost nutritious meals in their homes to promote health, independence and to avoid premature nursing home placement. St. Lucie County, as per the Department of Elder Affairs, is home to more than 37,000 women over the age of 60. This grant will provide meals to two individuals all year.

Life Builders of the Treasure Coast received a grant to help female heads of household in St. Lucie County who are striving to overcome poverty’s barriers and move forward on the path to success.

The need for funding always is great. There were 27 grant applicants. The Port St. Lucie Business Women's Community Action & Grants Committee will continue studying critical community needs to make decisions for future funding.

Plans are underway for the Port St. Lucie Business Women's 31st Annual Fashion Show to be held on Saturday, April 22, 2022, at the Harbour Ridge Yacht & Country Club in Palm City. This event is the organization's major fundraiser that supports its Community Action Grants & Awards to local non-profit agencies that work with women and children in our community and provides scholarships for women attending Indian River State College.
