#ParentsToo: When the #MeToo is Your Child
Treasure Coast parents of survivors of sexual violence have an upcoming place to find guidance, support, and hope. May 19, The Inner Truth Project in Port St. Lucie will host a Parent Workshop. Geared for parents with one or more children who suffered sexual victimization, the two-hour workshop will be facilitated by Janet Santiago, a local therapist experienced at working with survivors of sexual victimization. Her experience at The Inner Truth Project includes leading a free weekly therapy group for teen girl survivors, funded by the Children’s Services Council of St. Lucie County. The teen group is one of a variety of free support services offered by The Inner Truth Project for survivors of sexual assault, rape, or other sexual violence. The free Parent Workshop, a natural extension of the teen therapy group, will take place Saturday, May 19, from 1-3 pm at The Inner Truth Project Center in Port St. Lucie.
Parents of child/teen survivors often struggle to parent effectively in the aftermath of sexual violence, as well as how to deal with their own intense feelings. According to Mindi Fetterman, founder and director of The Inner Truth Project, “We felt that now, in light of the #MeToo movement, parents needed to be a part of the conversation around sexual violence. We know that the entire family needs guidance and direction with navigating the feelings a survivor may experience. We want to help empower parents who might be struggling with guilt or shame or maybe are just having a hard time with their child.” The goal of The Inner Truth Project is to give everyone who has been affected by sexual violence an opportunity to heal and thrive, and that includes parents, too.
The Parent Workshop will feature real talk and honesty and will be absolutely free. Parents who attend will leave equipped with valuable resources and crucial support—critical tools families can use to mend the damage of sexual violence. The event is free, but registration is required. To register for this free workshop, please call 772-200-4599 or reach us online at firstname.lastname@example.org. Space is limited, so please sign up today. Your call and participation are, of course, confidential.
