Circumstances were better than 'par for the course' as golfers hit the links at The Moorings at Hawk's Nest on a stellar January afternoon. Certified by the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program, golfers enjoyed soaring eagles and birdies as they participated in the 4-person scramble format of the 10th Annual Big Brothers Big Sisters Golf Tournament to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of Indian River County.
Last year's tournament format changed to a week-long Golf-A-Round to accommodate the COVID-19 pandemic.
"We are thrilled to be together again for this spectacular event. It is a beautiful day to make a difference in the life of a child," said Chief Operating Officer Debbie Hawley. "Thanks to all of our sponsors for helping us defend potential in our children and youth."
By creating and supporting one-to-one mentoring relationships, Big Brothers Big Sisters seeks to help youth achieve their full potential. Currently, the organization serves 456 children in Indian River County.
Forty-two percent of the County's students are not ready for kindergarten, and 46% are not reading successfully by the 3rd grade. Outcomes after one year of mentoring show an 82% increase in academic performance.
In 2020, thanks to a grant from Impact 100 Indian River County, the organization launched The BIG Mission, recruiting veterans and service professionals to serve as mentors to the County's struggling youth.
"By pairing veterans and first responders (Bigs) with students (Littles), the kids really do have a hero in a cape," said Hawley.
Golf sponsors include Bradley Lorimer, Pat, and Jack Bingleman, Bill and Peg Regan, Dale Sorensen Real Estate, Walmart Distribution Center #7038, Bonnie and Dave Wilson, Sarah and Stan Klinefelter Charitable Fund, Jim and Jean Kelly, Peter and Jan McLachlan, Facial Rejuvenation, Bud and Connie Angelus, Kathleen LaCroix, McMenamin Family ShopRite, Linda and Mel Teetz, and Mary and Jack Weisbaum.
Consider attending an event! Ninety percent of all funds raised go towards the one–to–one mentoring programs.
