Feb. 6 – Fascinating World of Bryozoans with Judith Winston, Smithsonian Marine Station. Bryozoans are colonial animals. Individuals (called zooids) are connected in colonies. Colonies grow by budding new zooids at colony edges. Not only do bryozoans make up the natural filtration systems of freshwater and marine environments, straining out excess food and debris particles to help keep the water clean, but they may also have medicinal properties and their fossil record may help us understand climate change.

· Feb. 20 – Florida’s Oculina Reef with John Reed, FAU Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute. The deep-water Oculina coral reefs off Fort Pierce and eastern Florida are unique and occur nowhere else on earth. They are made entirely by a single species of coral, the Ivory Tree Coral, Oculina varicosa. HBOI scientists first discovered the coral reefs with the Johnson Sea-Link submersibles in 1975. John Reed’s research on the Oculina reefs since 1976 has resulted in the establishment of the 600-square-mile Oculina Habitat Area of Particular Concern (HAPC) which extends from Fort Pierce to St. Augustine, and is the first marine protected area in the world to protect deep water coral. John Reed of FAU Harbor Branch will be giving an update on the current state of the Oculina coral reef bank including regulations.

The Smithsonian Exhibit is located in the St. Lucie County Aquarium, 420 Seaway Drive, on South Hutchinson Island in Fort Pierce. The Smithsonian Marine Station teamed with St. Lucie County and other community partners to open this unique educational facility in 2001. The Smithsonian Exhibit is an outreach effort of the Smithsonian Marine Station, a branch of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC. A fixture in the Fort Pierce community for more than 40 years, the Marine Station is dedicated to understanding the character and diversity of the marine and estuarine habitats of Florida.

Jonathan Edwards & Karla Bonoff

Edwards & Bonof Indian River County
Date: Thursday February 21, 2019
Location: The Emerson Center
Address: 1590 27th Avenue Vero Beach, FL
Category: Concert / Live Music
Jonathan Edwards - warm as summer sunshine, real as the truth, intimate as a long overdue visit between old friends ... such is a Jonathan Edwards concert. Four decades into a stellar career of uncompromising musical integrity, the man simply delivers, night after night - songs of passion, songs of insight, songs of humor, “Sunshine (Go Away Today),”and “Sometimes in the Morning.” - all rendered in that pure and powerful tenor which, like fine wine, has only grown sweeter with age.

Karla Bonoff's legacy as a writer and perseverance as a performer are spoken best in a Billboard Magazine review of Karla's All My Life recording. "Long before Alanis and Jewel, there was a breed of singer/songwriter whose earthly anthems of soul-searching, heartache and joy touched souls in a way few can muster today."
