The St. Lucie County Library System launches its Summer Reading Sensation Challenge with a Carnival Kickoff Party on Saturday, June 2 at 2 p.m. at four branch libraries.
The Carnival Kickoff Party will feature games, crafts, music and more, giving students the opportunity to pick up their reading logs for chances to win lots of prizes. The Carnival Kickoff Party will take place at:
· Lakewood Park Branch, 7605 Santa Barbara Drive, Fort Pierce / 772-462-6870
· Morningside Branch, 2410 Morningside Blvd., Port St. Lucie / 772 337-5632
· Susan B. Kilmer Branch, 101 Melody Lane, Fort Pierce / 772-462-1615
· Zora Neale Hurston Branch, 3008 Avenue D, Fort Pierce / 772-462-2154
The Libraries Rock Summer Reading Challenge takes place June 1 through Aug. 4 offering students a chance to win a free Kindle Fire (one will be given out at each of the seven branch libraries), as well as tickets to a special St. Lucie Mets game.
Students in kindergarten through 5th grade need to read at least 12 hours or 12 books and bring their completed log to any branch library. If they log 12 hours or 12 books over the summer, they’ll receive a Reading Medal and a voucher for a pair of St. Lucie Mets tickets. At six hours of reading (or six books) participants can bring their log to any branch and receive a popular youth book to keep.
Teens can also take part in the Summer Reading Challenge. Young adults (grades 6-12) need to read 16 books or for 16 hours and tell us your favorite moment in each book. When they turn in their completed log, they’ll be entered into their branch's grand prize drawing.
New this year is the addition of two new age groups: One for babies (My First Reading Log) and one for pre-school (Read to Me), thanks to grant from Baker & Taylor in conjunction with the Association to Library Service to Children.
The My First Reading Log is for newborns to 2-year-olds. Parents fill out their activity logs for documenting reading, writing, signing and talking. After six activities are completed, bring your log to any branch and receive a reward for your baby to keep. After 12 activities are completed, bring the log to any branch and receive a second reward for your baby.
For the pre-school students, the Read to Me Log is for ages 3 to 5. Again, parents help their children fill out their activity logs for documenting reading, writing, signing and talking. After six activities are completed, bring your log to any branch and receive a reward for your baby to keep. After 12 activities are completed, bring the log to any branch and rreceive a second reward for your child.
Participants of all ages are encouraged to attend the St. Lucie Mets Summer Reading Baseball Night on Friday, Aug. 3 at First Data Field in Port St. Lucie. Students can wear their medals to the ballpark, run the bases, get a chance to throw the first ball and watch the game with other Major League Readers!
The grand prize drawing for the Kindle Fire will take place at each branch on Friday, Aug. 10. Beginning June 1, student readers are invited to stop into any branch library to register and to pick up a reading log.
St. Lucie County’s Summer Reading Challenge is sponsored Baker & Taylor, in conjunction with the Association to Library Service to Children, the Friends of the Library, the Children’s Services Council of St. Lucie County and St. Lucie Mets.
In addition to the reading challenge, the library will be hosting a variety of weekly programs throughout the summer. A schedule of all programs, along with details about the Summer Reading Challenge, can be found on the St. Lucie County Library System homepage www.stlucieco.gov/library or at any branch library location.
