Local scientists and environmental educators are partnering once again to explore the natural world with Treasure Coast homeschooled students. Eight science and environmental organizations will host a weekly immersion series known as the Homeschool Hopper: Discovering the Native Wildlife of the Treasure Coast. In this collaborative science series, homeschool students will visit natural areas and preserves to learn about diverse topics including ecology, habitat restoration, biodiversity, conservation and more.
The series takes place Jan. 10 through Feb. 28, with sessions taking place each Friday from 10 a.m. to noon at various locations. Designed specifically for ages 10-14, the cost for the eight-part series is $45 per student. Pre-registration is required by calling Savannas Preserve State Park at 772-398-2779.

Jan. 10: Floridas Imperiled Beach Nesting Birds at the IRL Aquatic Preserves
Jan. 17: The Wildlife in Your Backyard at the Manatee Education and Observation Center
Jan. 24: Junior Jay Watch at the Savannas Preserve State Park
Jan. 31: The Beautiful Butterflies of Florida at Heathcote Botanical Gardens
Feb. 7: The Unsung Heroes of the Lagoon at The Environmental Learning Center
Feb.14: The Underground World of Gopher Tortoises at the Oxbow Eco-Center
Feb. 21: Fabulous Fish Adaptations at O.R.C.A
Feb. 28: Plankton Investigation at the Smithsonian Marine Ecosystem Exhibit
The Homeschool Hopper program began in 2014. Designed to teach a comprehensive Science unit through immersion and hands-on experiential learning, it has been a popular opportunity for area homeschool families. The Winter 2020 series is sure to exceed expectations with eight participating organizations, including the Oxbow Eco-Center, Smithsonian Marine Station, Savannas Preserve State Park, Manatee Observation & Education Center, Indian River Lagoon Aquatic Preserves, Ocean Research & Conservation Association (ORCA), The Environmental Learning Center (ELC) and Heathcote Botanical Gardens.
