Location: Downtown Fort Pierce

In downtown Fort Pierce on Saturday, October 27, as part of the Indian River Lagoon Science Festival

What is the Procession of the Species?

The Procession of the Species Celebration is a musical, colorful and delightful public expression of art and celebration of nature. Individuals and groups of all kinds will parade along the event grounds of the IRL Science Festival, masquerading as their favorite plant or animal!

Participation is free and open to any individual or group. Simply design a costume, float and giant puppet, and register your entry. Families, school groups, musicians, scout troops, clubs, governmental agencies and local businesses are all encouraged to get involved to make this a magical community event. There are no limits to who can participate; it’s designed for everyone as a way to bring the community together to celebrate our natural and human diversity.

Who creates the Procession?

You do! Along with dozens of community organizations and hundreds of volunteers.

Spread the word by getting together with your friends, colleagues, clubs, or any of your business or social groups. If you’re a teacher, business leader, art supporter, musician, dance instructor, or just someone interested in bringing the community together, get involved!

There are only Three Rules…

No written or spoken words. We use no words, symbols or lyrics in our art, music or dance.
No pets or live animals. We have no live animals in the Procession, with the exception of Service Animals.
No motorized vehicles. We do not motorize our creations which includes the use of musical amplification. Of course, a motorized wheelchair is certainly permitted.
Special Considerations

Keep it Green! Using recycled and re-purposed materials makes your costume cheap and eco-friendly! Old boxes, shopping bags and plastic bottles are just a few things that can be used to make larger-than-life entries!

The More the Merrier! Why be one fish when you could be a whole school? Including others in your entry is a great way to take a simple idea and make it extraordinary! Registration is open to school groups, clubs, sports teams, or even just you and your friends!

Wheels… The parade route is a mixture of paved and unpaved surfaces. Wheels should be rugged enough to handle dirt and grass. Large wagon wheels or those used on outdoor carts work great!

Don’t Get Blown Away! The parade will take place along the waterfront and given the time of year it may be windy. Please be aware large and/or tall entries may be affected by the wind and may require extra handling and attention.
