Port St. Lucie: Registration Open for Free Citizen’s Academy Until March 27

 Free Citizens Academy

City University is prepping for their first class of the year beginning Wednesday, April 12. City staff is encouraging all interested community members to register for this free citizen’s academy that gives residents in-depth lessons about their local government. Registration for City University is available now until March 27.
City University is a program that represents the next horizon in local government education, offering participants a first-hand look into City operates in real-time. The course is available to any Port St. Lucie citizen over the age of 18 and a select number of high school students with a letter of recommendation from an educator.
Participants learn about a variety of topics like how decisions are made, how city funds are allocated and how departments operate. Residents are also briefed on the current status and future plans for Port St. Lucie’s development. Classroom agendas are filled with lively discussions, practical application and other interactive activities to ensure participants walk away with a full understanding of how the City operations on a day-to-day basis. Residents are also given a tour of city facilities.
In its second year, City University is introducing a few changes including an extended and restructured schedule.
Specifically, the schedule has increased from 7 to 8 weeks, providing additional time for department presentations. The extension also allocates an entire session dedicated to the Police Department and its equipment and K-9 demonstration.
“We have also adjusted some of the presentations and grouped them together in a logical sense that allows the staff to present the information in an order we feel residents would want to receive the information,” said Carmen Capezzuto, Neighborhood Services Director.
All sessions will be held on Wednesday evenings from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. The new schedule also includes a dedicated graduation ceremony on Wednesday, May 31 at the Port St. Lucie Civic Center complete with cake and refreshments.
